Turnkey Power & Energy Management Systems for the Kos-Kalymnos Isolated Island Grid

Turnkey deployment of an advanced Power Management System and unified SCADA architecture for the Kos-Kalymnos isolated island grid, enabling coordinated operation between two interconnected island power plants with different generation capacities and operating requirements.

The project addressed grid stability, power quality and operational coordination challenges caused by the dependency of Kalymnos on imported power from Kos, combined with interconnection capacity limitations. Prior to the upgrade, voltage and frequency stability depended heavily on manual operator coordination, creating instability risk and making recovery from disturbances more difficult.

MAS delivered an integrated solution combining upgraded unit control systems, advanced power management and unified SCADA-based supervision. The project was executed on a turnkey basis, including training and lifecycle support.

Key Outcomes

  • Resolved power quality and grid stability issues across the isolated island grid
  • Enabled unified operation of the Kos and Kalymnos power plants
  • Improved frequency and voltage stability under varying load and generation conditions
  • Reduced blackout risk and improved recovery from power disturbances
  • Supported more economical operation through optimised load distribution
  • Reduced dependency on manual operator coordination between the two power plants
  • Delivered the brownfield upgrade without service interruption to consumers

Technical Capabilities Demonstrated

This project highlights MAS’ capability to deliver isolated grid power management systems for complex island power networks, where stability, coordinated operation and fast response to disturbances are critical.

MAS combined unit control upgrades, automatic frequency and voltage control, active and reactive load sharing, load shedding, grid synchronisation and SCADA-based operational supervision within a unified island power management architecture.

The project also demonstrates MAS’ expertise in power management systems, energy management for isolated grids, diesel and gas turbine generating unit control, AVR and governing system upgrades, cross-grid SCADA integration, power balancing systems and interconnection power flow control. Through blackout prevention, disturbance recovery and full turnkey engineering,

MAS delivered the complete scope from development, procurement and construction through to installation, commissioning and training.
