SCADA-Based Monitoring & Control Upgrade for Refinery Generator Systems

Deployment of a dedicated SCADA-based monitoring and control solution for refinery gas turbine generator sets supporting critical electricity and steam production processes.

The project addressed ageing generator infrastructure, where existing gas turbine control systems and generator automatic voltage regulation systems were based on mixed digital / analogue technologies that no longer supported reliable and cost-effective operation.

Following inspection, MAS proposed a lifecycle-oriented upgrade strategy designed to maintain the refinery power plant in operation until its planned decommissioning, avoiding a full replacement approach. The solution combined upgraded generator assets, modern control, protection and monitoring systems, redundant automatic voltage regulation and a refinery-specific SCADA environment for improved operational visibility.

Key Outcomes

  • Improved operational visibility of refinery gas turbine generator systems
  • Supported continued operation of critical power and steam generation assets
  • Enabled a cost-effective lifecycle strategy compared with full plant replacement
  • Improved monitoring, event awareness and operator response through SCADA-based supervision
  • Consolidated complex generator data into clearer, structured visual interfaces

Technical Capabilities Demonstrated

This project highlights MAS’ capability to deliver SCADA systems for refineries within complex brownfield Oil & Gas digitalisation projects, where reliable operation, lifecycle strategy and operational visibility are critical.

MAS combined lifecycle engineering, control system retrofit, gas turbine generator control protection and monitoring systems and automatic voltage regulation upgrades into a refinery-specific monitoring and control environment.

The project also demonstrates MAS’ expertise in redundant AVR systems, SCADA-based operational visibility, intelligent alerting, secure operator interfaces, technical training, commissioning and after-sales support within a demanding refinery power generation environment.
